Podcast #535: “Good” by Matthew West

Play episode

I’m Michelle Nezat and I hope to inspire you to discover and meditate on God’s Word through the songs you’re listening to on the radio.

What if the question you keep asking—“Am I worthy?”—is the wrong question altogether? In this episode of More Than a Song, we let Matthew West’s song “Good” lead us back to a life‑changing truth from Scripture: your lovability is not the issue. God’s goodness is.

Inspired by the lyric “I’m not loved because I’m worthy, I’m loved because You’re good,” we return (again!) to the book of Romans—and this time, we lean into the power of repetition. As we explore Romans 5, we discover how God’s love flows not from our performance, but from His character. And that realization just might wreck you… in the best way.

Key Points

  • Repetition is a powerful Bible Interaction Tool Exercise (BITE)—Scripture is meant to be revisited, not rushed.
  • Romans reminds us that God’s love is rooted in who He is, not in what we do.
  • We are not justified, loved, or reconciled because we are worthy—but because God is good.
  • Starting with God’s character, conduct, and concerns shifts our focus from a me-centered faith to a God-centered one.
  • Hope that is grounded in God does not lead to shame—it leads to confidence before Him.

Scriptures Referenced

  • Romans 5:1–11
  • Romans 5:6–8
  • Romans 5:8
  • Romans 5:1–5
  • Ephesians 2:8–9
  • Romans 7:15–24

BITEs (Bible Interaction Tool Exercises)

Try these BITEs as you explore Scripture for yourself this week:

  • Repetition – Read Romans 5:1–11 multiple times this week. Read it. Listen to it. Write it out. Sit with it.
  • Start With God – As you read, look specifically for God’s character, conduct, and concerns before focusing on yourself.
  • Ask Questions – What does it mean that “hope does not put us to shame”? Write down your questions as part of your interaction with the text.
  • Make a List – List what Romans 5 reveals about God (grace, peace, love, hope, glory).
  • Consider the Opposite – Compare God’s attributes with their opposites to better understand the depth of His goodness.
  • Share With a Friend – Try explaining what you learned to someone else to help solidify it in your heart and mind.

Your lovability is not the issue. It never was.”

This Week’s Challenge

Whether you revisit Romans 5:1-11 or take on more of the surrounding verses and chapters, be sure to start with God. Write down your discoveries, ask questions, make lists, and consider the opposite to get clarity on the truth. What did you learn? How does this change your perspective? Don’t rush past this step. One way I make it stick in my mind is to try to explain it to someone else. Also known as taking the BITE of sharing with a friend.
